BBC Children in Need
The good people of Pudsey, West Yorkshire must either be brimming
with pride or sick to the back teeth of their
association with the BBC’s Children in Need’s
custard-coloured mascot. Whatever their feelings, it is
difficult to find a reason to criticise this exemplar of
successful fundraising, albeit disguised as a good
excuse for a hitherto perfectly sedate newsreader to
dress like a prostitute and sing tunelessly with leggy
colleagues.
It’s now 19 years since the telethon appeal in its current format
began, although the BBC was appealing for funds for
children’s charities as early as 1927. Last year’s
target exceeded all expectations in the middle of a
global economic recession.
Whether we tune in or turn off, we fundraisers know why this
fundraising works. It has everything you need to bring
in charitable funds: information for the donor;
motivation and fun to take your mind off some of the
more horrendous case studies; matched funding
incentives; leadership (good old Terry and chums) and
need, need, need drummed in from beginning to end.
As funders, Children in Need are accessible and supportive and
their general grants programme allows them a great deal
of flexibility within the overarching aim to provide
support to organisations working with disadvantaged
children under 18.
If you are interested in applying, Midas partner Catherine Farrell
has just been successful in raising over £100,000 for
one of her clients in the most recent grants round
for a project working with young people who self harm.
Midas has a strong track record in assisting charities
with successful Children in Need applications, other
awards have included funding for canal boat holidays for
young people with special needs and disabilities and a
children's nurse for a hospice. We would be
happy
to help your organisation with your application. The
next deadline is January15th 2010. Email

Seminars for the sector |
26th November 9.30 – 12.00- Annual Accounts
and Legal Update
This seminar covers the key changes in law, accounting
and tax that have already, or are due to be brought in
over the next 12 months, that are likely to affect
charities and other not-for-profit organisations.
8th December 9.30 – 12.00 - Charities and VAT
It is widely believed that there is no general exemption
for charities from VAT and this misconception can prove
costly. This seminar will look at what income is (and
isn’t) VAT-able, exemptions, and special concessions
available to charities on their purchases, whether
registered or not, and what to do if you need to
register.
Both seminars are being hosted by Myers Clark in Watford
and led by Nicola
Ferriday, FCA FCIE, Myers Clark’s Not-For-Profit
Manager. Seminars
are free to Myers Clark clients. Other participants are
asked to make a donation to the company’s
nominated charity of the month (£20
is the suggested amount) Registration
starts from 30 minutes before the start of the seminar.
Tea or coffee will be
available. If
you would like to book a place on one of Myers Clark’s
not for profit seminars, please download,
complete and return an application form from the
not-for-profit section on
their
website:
